Christy Flynn is the founder and owner of Christy Cares Outreach. It is a non-profit organization that helps feed, clothe and assist members of the homeless community. Christy's objective is to openly share her heart in a way that portrays to those who have fallen on hard times that they are not alone. She truly cares about the community and their wellbeing.
Christy was born in Sacramento, CA. where she obtained most of her education. After many years of attending public school, at the age of 14 she was introduced to parochial schools; St. Robert Catholic School where she attended 8th grade and then onto Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. The format of these schools implemented a solid structure and consistent discipline that became a way of life for Christy.
However, due to increased criminal activities surrounding the area Christy grew up in, the family made a decision to relocate to Elk Grove, California. In 2009, Christy briefly lived in a community where the living situation for others was less than what she knew to be feasible. Many women with children were living below average. This touched Christy to the core, in a way she felt a strong desire to do something. As with any task she began to create a mental image of what she could do to help make the living conditions easier for these mothers.
Christy knew she could cook and create a meal plan. In addition to the meals, she reached out for other resources and was able to collect clothing and shoes. Christy wasn’t aware of the impact she had made on those around her until it was time for her to move back to Elk Grove where she currently resides. As the demand to assist the homeless increased each year, the desire to keep striving to help never ended. However, on the brief moments that Christy gets to take a break, she enjoys kicking her feet up to relax, spending time with family and crocheting. Christy is so dedicated to the community she once made over 100 hats and scarves that she passed out to the homeless.
In addition to helping others, she is a caregiver to her 88-year-old father. Unfortunately, she lost her mother in 1990. The skills Christy obtained as a youth through observing her parents, and being the oldest sibling to her brother and sister were extremely useful as she became a mother to three beautiful girls. Among her family members and co-workers, Christy was known for leading with firm direction, knowing how to budget, accomplishing tasks in a timely manner and living sparingly on limited resources.
In 2013, it was hard not to notice the increased homeless population within the Sacramento County. Christy immediately stepped into action by preparing meals and packaging the most commonly used toiletries in a Ziploc bag. She labeled the bags with a note that read “Christy Cares ”. By the following year, 2014, Christy had established and correlated with a group of women who volunteered their services to help expand and assist with Christy Cares Outreach.
In 2018, Christy Cares Outreach became official as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Christy Cares Outreach works with Elk Grove United Methodist Church, using the facility to provide a safe environment for the homeless to have a free meal on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-1pm.
Christy Cares Outreach is still growing, steadily improving and always welcoming additional resources for the unhoused in our community.
